CPT focuses on the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. After a traumatic experience, it's common to develop beliefs such as "I'm not safe,""It was my fault," or "I can't trust anyone." These beliefs can keep you feeling stuck long after the trauma has ended.
Rather than focusing primarily on changing thoughts, EMDR is used to help your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming. During treatment, you'll briefly focus on a traumatic memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds.
CPT is less about replaying the traumatic event in detail and more focusing on the uncomfortable or unwanted thoughts and behaviors that the trauma has caused for you
